Because of product failures in the past from hurricane damage, Florida has implemented a product approval system.
Florida building codes require that structural products meet statewide standards for use in both new construction and remodels. Certain geographic regions within Florida require higher standards than others. The state of Florida has established a formal product approval procedure to accommodate this for product manufacturers and issues a certification for approved roofing materials.
Florida Product Approval: Florida product approval provides a testing procedure to establish the durability of construction products and materials. Any roofing materials used in the roofing industry must have, at a minimum, a Florida Product Approval stamp.
Dade County Product Approval: Hurricane Andrew in August of 1992, slammed into South Florida exposing the need for tougher testing measures to be implemented for all structural building products. Roofing products and methods used in the newly established HVHZ (High-Velocity-Hurricane-Zone), will require a Dade County Product Approval.
